Changes in surgery
Three main problems with surgery are pain, bleeding and infection.
Pain
– solution, Simpson and chloroform 1847. Fewer die of shock.
Bleeding –
- Cauterise, but painful.
- WWI develops methods of storing blood for transfusions (blood groups discovered 1901).
Infection –
- Pasteur discovers germs in 1861.
- Lister develops carbolic spray in 1871 but could only deal with infection on the surface.
- Opposition to Lister did not believe in Germs, cracked hands, made operations expensive.
- Penicillin developed during WWII by Chain and Florey (D Day)
